Chao Mae Thapthim Shrine is a religious hub for the Chinese speaking community in Bangkok. It sits at the border of Chinatown and Pahurat, known as Bangkok’s little India. Its location near the Chao Praya river makes it a beautiful spot for sightseeing, as you can enjoy beautiful views of the river banks and western side of the city. The shrine is dedicated to Thabthim, the Chinese Goddess of Water.
This ancient deity was the protector of sailors who often had to tackle big waves on their trading routes to Thailand. The shrine was built in the early 20th century and served as a sanctuary during World War II. It was damaged in the war and rebuilt in 1955, while it was listed as one of Bangkok’s important archeological sites in 1988. Besides for the intricate oriental architecture, you shouldn’t miss seeing what’s considered the most valuable item in the shrine – the the goddess statue encased within an old Chinese-style palanquin.
Fitness in Bangkok has significantly evolved in the past decade, and the best local gyms are run by the Jetts team. A popular gym near Chao Mae Thapthim Shrine is Jetts 24 Hour Fitness – Market Place, where you can enjoy your workout at any time of the day and night. This Bangkok gym has been opened quite recently, but it soon gained reputation among those who enjoy group classes and aerobic exercise, as it offers a generous range of cardio machines with a view on the surrounding Bangkok streets.
If you get hungry after visiting Chao Mae Thapthim Shrine, you’re in luck – the shrine is surrounded with countless eateries that cater to each taste. Among the most popular is definitely the On Lok Yun, a traditional breakfast place that combines Chinese, Thai and western dishes in a friendly, laid back setting.
