Wat Ratchabophit Sathitmahasimaram is one of the most intricate Buddhist temples in Bangkok. It was built in 1869 to mark the reign of king Rama V. The unique architecture of the temple was achieved by fusing western and eastern styles – the exterior is traditional Thai, while the interior is decorated with European elements.
The highlight of the temple is a central sculpture of Buddha, who sits on an Italian marble pedestal. The striking colorful exterior is achieved with thousands of hand painted tiles and golden decorative accents on windows and doors. A Royal Cemetery can be found on the western part of the temple while the monks still operate and reside in the south building, which is a great opportunity to meet them and learn about their traditions.
