An iconic part of Lisbon’s skyline, the Castelo de São Jorge stands out both during the day and at night when illuminated. The Lisbon Castle is located on the summit of São Jorge hill, the highest in Lisbon. built-in the mid-11th century, the hilltop fortification has seen it all– the fall of the Romans to the Visigoths, the Arabs and Christian conflicts in the 12th centuries, sieges by Castilians and the birth of Portugal.
Outside the Castle you get to see the statue of St. George and the Santa Cruz do Castelo church. The streets outside are also very beautiful. The castle itself has impenetrable walls and 11 towers. Ruins of the older structures and a cistern remain in a second courtyard. There is also a camera obscura, an optical system of lenses and mirrors which give a 360º view of the city in real-time. There is a panoramic view of the Baixa, River Tejo and the Cristo Rei statue in Amalda. there is also an archeological site showing different significant periods in the history of Lisbon. the ruins of the Royal Palace of Alcáçova are still here. To get to Castelo use the Metro Rossio. Also, public buses are available throughout the day.
