Hungary is a country in Central Europe, more precisely in the Carpathian Basin, bordering Austria, Slovenia, Croatia, Serbia, Romania, Ukraine and Slovakia. The largest city and the capital of the country is Budapest where approximately 1.8 million people live out of the country’s 10 million population. Other notable cities are Debrecen, Pécs, Győr, Szeged and Sopron. Becoming independent from the Soviet Union in 1989, Hungary joined the European Union in 2004.
Most of the tourist are visiting Budapest and its attractions like the Castle of Buda, the Parliament, St. Stephen’s Basilica, and the Liberty Statue on Gellért Hill to name a few. The thermal baths across the country are also popular with Lake Hévíz being the second largest thermal lake in the world, while Lake Balaton is the largest lake in Central Europe. Mainly younger people arrive to enjoy festivals like Sziget Festival. The city center of Budapest with the ruin pubs is also a very popular destination for hen and stag parties among Western-Europeans due to their relatively cheap prices.
Hungary is one of the least active countries in the EU but this is not due to a lack of gyms. Approximately 50% of the population does any exercise in their free time. Especially in Budapest it’s fairly easy to find gyms, which are mainly competing on prices rather than quality. However, there are some bigger franchises across the city well-equipped with modern machines and offering group classes. However, due to the language barrier that exists in the country, coupled with the fact that most gyms require you to sing up and register even for a one-off workout, TrainAway is any travelers’ best option to get access to gyms through day passes.
